Zanzibar's north tip: swimmable at any tide

Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Unguja, and it has one advantage no east-coast beach can match: the seabed drops away close to shore, so you can swim at low tide. While Paje and Jambiani empty across the flats twice a day, Nungwi keeps its water.
It is also the island's most developed strip: a working dhow-building village wrapped in three decades of tourism. That mix is the charm and the trade-off. More restaurants, more boats, more people, and more persistence from beach vendors than anywhere else on the island.

Swim at any tide
The headline reason to stay north. The reef lagoon still breathes with the tide, but the water off the main beach stays deep enough to swim through the cycle.
Mnarani Marine Turtle Sanctuary
A natural lagoon pond where rescued and rehabilitated sea turtles are cared for; you can swim with them. Small entry fee, and the fee funds the work.
Sunset dhow cruises
Traditional sailboats leave the beach most evenings for an hour on the water as the sun drops. Sold along the beach and through every hotel; agree what is included first.
Mnemba Atoll snorkelling
Boats run daily to the atoll's reef, one of the island's best snorkelling spots. The island itself is private: you snorkel the reef, you do not land.
Kendwa next door
Ten minutes south, Kendwa is a wider, quieter beach by day and home of the famous full-moon parties. Easy to split a stay or an evening between the two.

Know before you go
- This is the busiest, most built-up part of the island; book early for June to October.
- Beach vendors are persistent; friendly but firm works better than ignoring them.
- Kusi winds (June to October) can chop up the sea on afternoons; mornings are usually calmest.
- Low tide still empties the reef-side lagoon, so check a tide table if snorkelling from shore.
