Matemwe

Quiet north-east village closest to Mnemba Atoll

Updated

Matemwe sits on the north-east coast, between Nungwi and the east-coast resorts, and it keeps the pace of a working village rather than a tourist strip. The beach is calm and the water clear, with the reef lagoon filling at high tide.

Its main advantage is proximity: Matemwe is the closest village to Mnemba Atoll's reef, so boat trips are shorter and cheaper than from Nungwi. It suits travellers who want the north-coast swimming without the crowds and the vendors.

Highlights

Closest to Mnemba Atoll

Boats leave Matemwe's small harbour for the atoll's reef in about ten minutes, a shorter and cheaper trip than from Nungwi. The reef is one of the island's best for snorkelling.

Local village life

Matemwe is a working village with a small harbour, a few guesthouses and a handful of restaurants. It is quiet, friendly, and far less developed than Nungwi or Kendwa.

Calm, clear water

The north-east coast keeps enough depth to swim at any tide, and the water is usually clear. The reef lagoon fills at high tide with warm, shallow water over white sand.

Easy link to Nungwi

Ten minutes south, Nungwi is the island's most developed beach village. Easy to split a stay or an evening between the two, with a short dala dala ride or a walk along the coast road.

Good for

  • Quiet, local atmosphere
  • Short boat trips to Mnemba Atoll
  • All-tide swimming
  • Budget and mid-range stays

Know before you go

  • Fewer restaurants and shops than Nungwi; pick a guesthouse near the places you will actually eat.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring cash from Nungwi or Stone Town.
  • The transfer from Stone Town takes about an hour and a half by road.
  • Kusi winds (June to October) can chop up the sea on afternoons; mornings are usually calmest.
