Kiwengwa

Mid-range resort strip with tide-dependent swimming

Updated

Kiwengwa is a mid-range resort strip on the north-east coast, between Matemwe and the east-coast beaches. It has a long, wide beach with white sand and palm trees, and the water is clear and calm at high tide.

The village is less developed than Nungwi or Kendwa, with a mix of guesthouses and small hotels. It suits travellers who want a quieter base with good-value rooms and easy access to the north-coast attractions.

Highlights

Wide, white-sand beach

Kiwengwa's beach is broad and open, with room to spread out even in high season. The sand is white and the water clear, making it a good choice for families and travellers who want space.

Tide-dependent swimming

Like the rest of the east coast, Kiwengwa's swimming follows the tide table. At low tide the water retreats across the flats, and at high tide a warm, shallow lagoon fills in against the palm line.

Good-value accommodation

Kiwengwa has a mix of guesthouses and small hotels, with prices generally lower than Nungwi or Kendwa. It is a good base for travellers who want comfort without the north-coast crowds.

Easy access to Mnemba

Boats to Mnemba Atoll's reef leave from Kiwengwa's small harbour, a shorter trip than from Nungwi. The reef is one of the island's best for snorkelling.

Good for

  • Quiet, mid-range base
  • Wide, white-sand beach
  • Good-value accommodation
  • Easy access to Mnemba Atoll

Know before you go

  • Swimming follows the tide table: the flats empty at low tide and the water is shallow and warm at high tide.
  • Fewer restaurants and shops than Nungwi; pick a guesthouse near the places you will actually eat.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring cash from Nungwi or Stone Town.
  • The transfer from Stone Town takes about an hour and a half by road.
